This premium hard-grade Akadama 赤玉 is a professional-quality bonsai soil component, imported from Japan. It is heat-treated 熱処理済 (netsu shori-zumi) and sterilized 殺菌 (sakkin). Sourced from volcanic clay deposits, akadama is prized for its ideal balance of moisture retention, drainage, and root aeration. This variety is hard-type 硬質 (kōshitsu), meaning it is more resistant to breakdown than standard akadama, making it perfect for long-term use in bonsai soil. Akadama is not a rock, it is a volcanic clay and even hard akadama can be crushed between your fingers andbreaks down over time, which promotes short internodes and ramification.We are very satisfied with this product and the results are evident in the thousands of trees we care forhere at the nursery.Please note that the 1 quart, 2 quart, 1 gallon,2.5 gallon and 6 gallon quantities do not ship in the original packaging from Japan.
