This is a handwritten letter from Henry Clay, an American lawyer and statesman who represented Kentucky in both the US Senate and the House of Representatives. He was the seventh House speaker as well al the ninth Secretary of State. Clay unsuccessfully ran for president in the 1824,1832, and 1844 elections. The letter itself appears to discuss the War of 1812 and a proposed amendment to the Constitution.
This letter was discovered in the 1980\'s folded up in very old book in the library at my grandmother\'s house in North Carolina. She lived in the house from the 1910\'s until the 1970\'s. The name of the gentleman that the letter is addressed to is not familiar to anyone in our family. The house had several bedrooms that were rented out during both World War 1 and World War 2, so any of the tenants may have left this letter behind.
The letter has been framed and mounted behind glass since it\'s discovery in the 1980\'s. The frame, matting and glass are in good shape and will convey to the buyer.
