These \"friend or foe\" IFF switch boxes were used in a variety of WWII combat aircraft including fighters like the P-47 and P-51, and bombers such as the B-17, B-24 and B-25. Theswitchbox measures 3 3/8\" X 3 1/8\" X 1 3/4\" with a set of toggle switches controlling \"recognition\" colored lights on the exterior of the aircraft. Used when returning from a night mission where the airfield operators watched for an enemy aircraft sneaking in the darkness, the pilot would signal with a pre-arranged set of colors and/or a flashed code word on the lights. The toggles controlled the lights and a key button for sending code words are on the box face.
