Genghis Khan (born Temüjin, c. 1162) was the founder and first Great Khan of the Mongol Empire. He united the warring nomadic tribes of the Mongolian steppe and created the largest contiguous land empire in history, stretching from the Pacific Ocean to Central Europe. This anonymous jital type is believed to have been struck by a Mongol mint at or near Ghazna about AD 1221, during the pursuit of Genghis Khan’s greatest foe, Mangubarni, to the Indus River. The Great Khan Genghis is cited as “The Just and Supreme Khaqan.”
