Iceland 1932 75 Aur greenish-blue Gullfoss waterfall issue.
This is the highest denomination of Iceland’s attractive Gullfoss definitive series and one of the more desirable mint values of the issue.
The stamp depicts Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most famous natural landmarks. Its name translates as “Golden Falls,” and the waterfall drops in two dramatic stages into the Hvítá river canyon. Gullfoss became an important symbol of Iceland’s spectacular natural landscape and was a fitting subject for the country’s increasingly pictorial stamp designs of the early 20th century.
The 75 Aur value was issued in 1932 and was engraved and printed by Thomas De La Rue in London. Unlike some of the lower denominations in the Gullfoss series, which are found with different perforation varieties, the 75 Aur value was issued with the line-perforated type.
This example retains its original gum and has been hinged previously.
