Only 2 blemishes to currently speak of are -
Issue #1. -
Discovered recently, that 1 of the 2 navy blue colored fabric-wrapped grilles unfortunately had a hole punctured/melted through its fabric while in storage. (They were fabric re-wraps, so no loss to originality.) Grille frame was unharmed. Only the fabric was punctured.
So it will require a new re-fabric wrapping.
And I wouldn’t expect finding a perfectly-exact color/fabric texture match to its partner… At least, not without great effort of scouring the earth. So having to re-wrap Both grilles will more-than-likely be the necessary course, to re-achieve their fabric/color matching perfection.
My OCD has been itching to just get it done myself...
But perhaps their new owner might potentially have a different color/fabric choice in-mind? In which case, my having done so would’ve been a waste. So I’ve elected to hold-off on doing it myself. The new owner can make that decision. Or, we can make it together. Negotiable.
Issue #2. -
Woofers had been “professionally” refoamed by a shop who, unbeknownst to me, elected to utilize the foam surround type designed for “top mounting adhesion” to the cone.
The “top vs. bottom foam surround” topic is apparently debatable amongst the community. Sure, sound quality doesn’t seem to be noticeably any different. But my opinion has always been: They were originally engineered for bottom adhesion of the foam to the cone. Thusly- “That’s what they ought to be.”… ?
I’ve not yet encountered any argument or evidence to sway me from that interpretation.
But the main issue resulting from anyone having switched to a top-affixed foam surround- is the resulting glue/adhesive, top-paper-cone-rim edge scarring, which presents itself if ever attempting to revert-it-back to a “bottom-glued-foam”. Ultimately, winding-up needing to replace the cone. Or else aoffere viewing the daily display of ugly cone-rim-edge glue scars. A lasting testimony to one’s not knowing to ask questions, before allowing a “professional” to lay-hands on your gear. Scars which are only more glaringly apparent, when contrasted amongst all the other otherwise absolute aesthetic perfection. My own scars over the ordeal are not so easily seen.
- 1 woofer “top-affixed” refoamed in 2023.
- The other woofer, I rectified-refoamed “correctly”, back to a bottom-affixed foam in 2025.
So, currently, and to reiterate -
1 woofer has “top mounted” type of surround foam (2023).
The Other woofer has the more “original, factory-correct” bottom-affixed foam (2025).
Point being -
The pair, side-by-side- to the knowing & discerning eye- The woofers foam mounting styles don’t match each other. Only a knowledgeable & educated person would be able to identify the fact. The contrast is boldly evident in the provided photos, which also progressively happen to capture varying stages during that progression. However, I assure you- In live setting- Their differing is far less perceptible and/or discernible.
I just couldn’t justify re-doing the other- 2023’s- surround foam- yet.
As I said- “It sounds fine.”
(Listen to the brief sample video’s audio on a quality pair of headphones/earbuds. Those 2231H’s bass hit just “snaps”. Characteristic vintage JBL tight.)
No point tackling the task of the other’s rectification back to original-“foam-to-cone-bottom”… Not until its foam inevitably has age-worn enough to justify the doing so.
And they always Will need refoaming. -Every so-many-odd-years. Depending on their climate, humidity & use… Just the nature of the beast.
So to eventually restore matching perfection- When it does come-time to refoam that (2023 foamed) woofer. -The new owner will likely want to replace the cone as well… If he has his designs set-upon restoring it to a bottom-affixed foam to match the one I’ve already done. And doesn’t want to aoffere the residual cone-rim edge scars, which would consequently be associated with the endeavor. That? or else revert the other one back to top-affixed foam, if that’s your preference. Either way.
I currently know where to aquire the bottom-affixed foam. And can pass that info along.
More pics/video can be made available at request.
Due to each weighing approx 150 Lbs-
- They will need to be picked up.
Shipping isn’t entirely out of the question. But after wood crating them, and the cost of LTL Freight?… It’d end up costing at least $1,500 to pack & ship them correctly, to insurable standards.
So unless you have your own blanket-wrap carrier to make arrangements with? - It’s gonna be “local pickup only”.
Which is appropriate. As I would expect most would want to see them, if not also transport them themselves, personally. In continuance of their 50 yr trend of having been protected & handled like 300Lbs newborn twins, whenever moved from a stationary position.
