The $500 denomination is, of course, the King of the Republic of Texas Lone Star series and is the rarest of any of the six denominations by a wide margin. The notes wonderfully framed face features a classic vignette ofCommerceandPlentyseated on a wharf with boxes barrels, and ships of various types in the background. It was engraved by George W. Hatch who has indicated this in microprinting along the bottom of the vignette. This is complemented by a striking 500 end panel at left and a smaller vignette ofLibertyseated with an eagle at right. One of the highlights of this example is the gorgeous orange Lone Star back design which has retained its original hue. While the note has the usually encountered hammer cancels, there is virtually no paper loss or shrinkage. The note is signed by Mirabeau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas and brother of Gazaway Bugg Lamar, who acted as an agent for the Confederacy in New York City two decades later when he placed orders with American Bank Note Company / National Bank Note Company for the Confederate States of America's first Treasury Notes and other fiscal instruments on the eve of the Civil War.American History Collection Pedigree.
