Japanese Traditional Kamakura-Bori 3-Drawer Chest – Peony Design
A beautiful Japanese three-drawer chest featuring traditional Kamakura-bori carved lacquerwork, decorated with an elegant peony motif.
Kamakura-bori is a distinguished Japanese lacquerware tradition originating in Kamakura, Japan. Its roots are associated with the Kamakura period, when Japanese craftsmen were influenced by carved lacquerware introduced from China along with Zen Buddhist culture. Craftsmen developed a distinctive technique of carving designs into wood and finishing the surface with layers of lacquer. Over the centuries, the tradition expanded from Buddhist and tea-related objects into decorative and practical items.
Because Kamakura-bori requires both wood-carving and lacquer-finishing techniques, it represents a distinctive part of Japan’s traditional craft heritage.
This particular piece features a large and impressive peony design carved across the front of the three drawers. The deep reddish-brown and black tones beautifully emphasize the carved floral pattern.
Unlike many smaller Japanese accessory chests, this is a large three-drawer example, measuring approximately 39 cm (15.4 in) high and capable of accommodating B5-size documents.

This item was stored for many years in its original box at a family home and has never been used.
The chest itself remains in very good preserved condition. Please note that the original cardboard box shows age-related wear, staining and deterioration from long-term storage.
