DESCRIPTION
Fine Japanese Meiji period art pottery vase in tree trunk form with applied plum blossom decoration and flowing flambé glaze, closely related to works attributed to Makuzu Kozan (1842–1916).
Miyagawa Kōzan I(1842–1916) was a Japaneseceramist. The most distinctive feature of Kozan\'s works in the early period was the unprecedented amount of three-dimensional sculptures applied to them. This three-dimensional decoration technique was calledTakaukibori. Birds such as raptors and pigeons, mammals such as bears and cats, crustaceans such as crabs, plants such as cherry blossomsand grapes, and fictional creatures such as oniand anthropomorphic frogswere frequently used as motifs for sculptures.During the 1890s Kōzan developed a style of decoration that combined multiple underglaze colours on each item.
CONDITION
Overall excellent. No chips, cracks or evidence of repair (all visible in the images). A lovely Meiji period vase in exceptionally fine condition.
