A Japanese Satsuma pottery plate produced by the Choshuzan workshop in Kyoto and decorated by the artist Jissei after a design by Yodhisada. Dates to the late Meiji period / early 20th century.
The plate portrays portrays arhats (buddhist sages or immortals) and figures gathered around a dramatic, writhing black-and-white dragon emerging from a censer, in a rocky landscape with distant pagodas. The underside decorated with scrollwork and Shimazu cross.
Crafted from earthenware with detailed overglaze polychrome painting, raised white enamel accents, and extensive hand-applied gilt detailing.
Detailed mark on the base, identifying the kiln and artist.
