LEONID BERMAN “Shrimp Drying in Japan” Oil Painting on Canvas Framed 1968 *RARE* For Sale

The acme of mid-century Asian-inspired art, “Shrimps Drying in Japan” oil painting by Leonard Berman, signed, dated 1968 lower right. An extremely rare example of his work, very likely never exhibited and acquired directly from his estate in 1981 where his paintings were hung “floor to ceiling” in his New York apartment. Painting is in fine-very fine condition overall; only the tiniest loss along the top edge and a paint thinner spill (artist mishap) along the right edge. Perfect otherwise. Bright color throughout and a generous use of Venetian red which he rarely, if ever used. Original frame measurements: 33 x 28”. I will include a “Statement of Provenance” along with the painting. Please see photos for best description!Leonid Berman (1896–1976) was a Russian-born Neo-Romantic painter renowned for his poetic landscapes and beach scenes, who built a significant artistic career in Paris and later the United States.
Following the Russian Revolution, Berman fled Russia, relocating to Finland, then to France in 1919. In Paris, Berman studied painting at the Académie Ranson, training under his brother and the French artist Christian Bérard. This period laid the foundation for his Neo-Romantic style, which emphasized emotional themes in reaction to the “abstractions” of Cubism and Futurism. He held his personal exhibitions at the Galerie Pierre, and participated in the “Modern French Art” exhibition in Moscow (1928).
During the economic crisis of the early 1930s Berman went bankrupt. However, art dealer and fashion designer Christian Dior became his benefactor. He rented a house for the painter in Normandy and organized Berman’s personal exhibition at the gallery J. Levy in New York (1935).
In 1939 Berman was called up for French military service. After the capture of Paris by German troops, Berman was forced into a labor camp for the next three years.
After being liberated at the end of the war, he moved to the United States in 1946, settling in New York. Soon after, he married the famous harpsichordist and musician Sylvia Marlowe (1908-1981), linking him to a broader circle of artistic and influential individuals. Leonid Berman continued painting in New York until his death in 1976.Berman’s work is distinguished by beach and coastal landscapes, often featuring fishermen and boats. His work is part of numerous collections, including museums and private holdings that recognize his contribution to Neo-Romantic painting. Berman is remembered for merging classical landscape techniques with a modern, expressive vision, establishing him as a notable figure among 20th-century artists.
