A blockout (blackout) backing in a nameset is an opaque middle layer used to prevent the shirt's underlying fabric color or dye from bleeding through the lettering and distorting the color.
Professional player kits utilize specialized blockout as it stops dye migration on performance jerseys when the garment's dye reactivates under heat-press temperatures and bleeds into white or light-colored vinyl, turning your crisp white letters pink or gray
It improves opacity by ensuring that dark jersey colors don't show through thin or reflective lettering, keeping the nameset looking solid and sharp.
