Up for sale is a magnificent and rare 18th Century Neoclassical Giltwood Sconce. Standing at an impressive 27 inches tall, this piece is a masterclass in Louis XVI period design, featuring a prominent, hand-carved Ram’s Head (Bucranium) centerpiece.
Design & Craftsmanship
The sconce is intricately carved from solid wood and finished in traditional gold leaf over a gesso ground. It features:
• Architectural Central Column: Flanked by two heavy, cascading floral swags of roses and foliage.
• Classical Motifs: A beautifully detailed ram’s head at the crest and an acanthus leaf terminal at the base.
• Original Structure: The back shows clear evidence of 18th-century hand-tooling (hand-planed wood) and the deep oxidation expected of a 250-year-old antique.
• Double Arms: Two elegant scrolling metal arms supporting candle nozzles.
Condition Report
This piece is in original, unrestored "country house" condition.
• Surface: There is significant, honest wear to the gilding with visible flaking of the gesso, revealing the history and age of the piece.
