This is an antique Japanese portable folding candlestick (kaichu shokudai), produced during the late 19th century (Late Edo to Meiji period). It comes with a wooden storage box.
Crafted from solid brass, this piece features a mechanical "Karakuri" style design, historically attributed to the inventive style of Karakuri Giemon. The candlestick is constructed with multiple hinged joints, allowing it to extend into a tall stand for use and fold flat into a highly compact shape for travel. The movable joints are secured with decorative rivet caps shaped like chrysanthemum flowers. The base consists of two folding leaves with circular cutouts to provide stability when standing.
