Lega Bwami Society Mask — Genuine African Tribal Art, DRC Congo, Kaolin & Raffia Beard
Authentic carved wood Lega mask from the Bwami society, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Heart-shaped face with elongated form, coated in traditional kaolin (white clay) pigment — reapplied by the Lega each time the mask was displayed in ceremony — with pierced eyes and a long flowing raffia/fiber beard. Small attachment holes visible around the perimeter, consistent with genuine ceremonial use.
Lega masks are among the most scholarly-documented genres of Central African tribal art, tied to the Bwami association's initiation ceremonies; comparable examples are held in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
