ARTIST: Leon Dusseau (1918-1991) (aka DUSSO), LISTED CALIFORNIA CALIF CA MODERN MODERNISM OIL MODERNISM. Mid Century Modern, California Modernism, California Modern. Listed: Askart, Hughes - Artists in California 1786-1940. Fine modern example mid Century modernist piece with figure and helmet. Known for Mayan and Ican design pieces and was known to be son of art director at Paramount Pictures Hollywood. Painted oil on masonite. In need of restoration due to craquelure and age cracking (see photos).
Leon D\'Usseau, Jr. Born in Los Angeles, CA on March 21, 1918. Leon was the son of an art director at Paramount Pictures. He anglicized his name to Dusso and studied under Merrill Gage and Archipenko at the Chouinard Art Institute. He was active as an artist in his native city and a resident of Sherman Oaks, CA in the 1960s. He died in Lake Elsinore, CA on Nov. 23, 1991. His painting style was influenced by Mayan or Incan designs. Exh: LACMA, 1937-40; CPLH, 1941; MM, 1942; LA AA, 1944; Audubon Ass\'n, 1945; Calif. WC Society, 1946; Laguna Festival of Arts. SIZE: Aprox. 26.5x32.5 framed, aprox. 18x24 unframed
CONDITION: As found condition (see photos). Sold as found. SOME LIGHT RESTORATION NEEDED - paint appears to be flaky and a fair amount of craquelure on the face. May need some paint stabilization in this area (see photos). Many Dusso pieces have a fair amount of craquelure and cracking from the piece we have seen -and may be because they lack a varnish. As found vintage condition with frame included - edge wear can be seen due to age. Overall good vintage condition with the light restoration needed.
