Description
Original wood engraving by Leonard Baskin (American, 1922–2000), “J.F. Millet and Th. Rousseau,” from his 1969 Self Portraits series. Pencil-signed lower right, numbered 38/175 lower left. This exact composition is held in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Brooklyn Museum (illustrated for reference in the last photo).
Provenance: Sold new by Casdin Gallery, 93 Elm St., Worcester, MA, on 3/6/1971 for $110 — original gallery exchange-policy label included and shown, along with a Worcester Sunday Telegram clipping (3/7/1971) reviewing the Casdin Gallery’s Baskin/Dalí exhibition where this piece was likely shown. Full paper trail included with the sale.
Baskin was a major 20th-century American sculptor, printmaker, and founder of the Gehenna Press; his work is in MoMA, the Met, and other major museum collections.
