1851 MITCHELL\'S PRIMARY GEOGRAPHY ANTIQUE SCHOOLBOOK ENGRAVINGS COLOR MAPS PHILA
Description:
Up for your consideration is this antique 1851 copy of Mitchell\'s Primary Geography, the Second Revised Edition, written by S. Augustus Mitchell and published in Philadelphia by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. Subtitled \"An Easy Introduction to the Study of Geography,\" it was designed for the instruction of children in schools and families, and it comes from the Mitchell series that ranked among the most widely used American geography texts of the mid-1800s.
This is a true antebellum schoolbook, roughly 175 years old, made in the United States. It is bound in a dark green leather spine with printed paper-covered boards, a classic and economical binding style for schoolbooks of the period. The pictorial cover is printed in black ink on warm tan paper, with a Gothic-style architectural vignette above the title panel and a pair of engraved children at the foot of the design. The title page is dated 1851 and carries a charming vignette of two young scholars walking to their little schoolhouse.
Inside you get 120 engravings and 14 color-tinted maps, plus a frontispiece scene of a teacher pointing out the hemispheres to his class. The book is organized into 77 short geography lessons followed by a set of astronomy lessons, running past page 170. The preface highlights engravings of the Landing of the Pilgrims, William Penn\'s Treaty with the Indians, and Pocahontas saving Captain Smith, all meant to help young minds remember history through pictures.
The real fun is the map work. The Western States and Territories lesson and map cover Minnesota Territory and Indian Territory, and the text also names the Oregon, Utah, and New Mexico Territories. The contents list far-off names like the Ionian Republic, Birmah, Tartary, and Oceanica. It is a snapshot of how a young America taught its children to see the world just as the country was pushing west.
Textbooks of this era were made to be used hard, so surviving examples appeal to collectors of Americana, education history, and early cartography. It would look right at home on a shelf, in a display, or in a classroom-themed vignette.
Class is in session, and this one is unlikely to last until recess, so add it to your shelf before someone else gets top marks.

You really like the thing, but not so much the price...We find cool stuff, do some research and list it for what we think it\'s worth. Sounds pretty simple but sometimes not. So if this is something you really like but its a bit more than you had hoped to pay, then be sure to watch this because we can\'t send it to the bank, and if it ends without a buyer chances are good that we will drop the price and re-list it until it does sell! Two things for sure - it will get sold sooner rather than later, and that\'s better for both of us.
