Antique Maryland Court of Appeals Judge Gavel Samuel D. Schmucker James Madison Provenance
Description:
Antique wooden court/judge’s gavel attributed to Judge Samuel D. Schmucker, a member of the Maryland Court of Appeals.
This piece has been preserved in my family and comes with the original handwritten family provenance note shown in the photographs.
The note states:
“This gavel was used by Judge Samuel D. Schmucker, member of Court of Appeals of Maryland. He used this until he was presented with a good one. He was a second cousin of my Grandmother Sarah Catherine (Schmucker) Cooley. Samuel D. Schmucker’s mother was a Steinberger. She was related to James Madison and to the Curtis family.”
The handwritten note will be included with the gavel.
This is an unusual piece of Maryland judicial and family history. The gavel shows substantial age and use, including wear, discoloration, marks, scratches and surface imperfections consistent with an antique working object. Please examine all photographs carefully for condition.
The provenance is especially interesting because the accompanying family documentation identifies the gavel directly with Judge Samuel D. Schmucker and records the family’s connection to the Schmucker, Steinberger, Cooley, Curtis and James Madison families.
IMPORTANT: The historical and genealogical information above is taken from the handwritten family provenance accompanying the gavel.
Included:
• Antique wooden gavel
• Original handwritten family provenance note
• The exact items pictured
An exceptional conversation piece for a collector of Maryland history, American judicial history, legal antiques, political/history memorabilia, or historical family artifacts.
Sold as an antique collectible in its present condition. Please review all photographs, including close-ups, as they form an important part of the description.
