Russian-Language Hardcover Memoir – Moscow – 2008

An elegant and highly visual memoir by Maya Plisetskaya, one of the most celebrated ballerinas of the 20th century and an enduring icon of Russian and Soviet ballet.

Published in Moscow by AST / AST Moscow / Novosti, this richly illustrated volume presents Plisetskaya’s Тринадцать лет спустя: Сердитые заметки в тринадцати главах — approximately “Thirteen Years Later: Angry Notes in Thirteen Chapters.” The work follows her earlier memoir and reflects on the significant events, personalities, artistic experiences, controversies, honors, and memories that accumulated during the subsequent thirteen years.

The bibliographic information identifies this edition as a Russian-language hardcover with ISBN 978-5-17-045344-3. Library catalog records describe the book as a 2008 Moscow edition devoted to Plisetskaya and Russian ballet.

A Collector’s Book on a Ballet Legend

This is much more visually engaging than a conventional memoir. Throughout the book are extensive black-and-white photographs, portraits, performance images, documentary photographs, artistic drawings, and reproductions, creating an intimate visual record of Plisetskaya’s extraordinary career and later life.

The photographed pages show striking images of Plisetskaya both on stage and away from it, including scenes associated with major ballet performances, public appearances, honors, and her personal life.

Among the visible material are photographs connected with such celebrated works as:

  • Swan Lake
  • The Dying Swan
  • Anna Karenina
  • Major anniversary and gala performances
  • Photographs documenting honors and recognition
  • Portrait photography of Plisetskaya in later life
Distinctive Design

The book has a particularly striking presentation, with a vivid red hardcover featuring a dramatic white silhouette of a ballerina in motion and bold black-and-white Cyrillic typography.

The design continues into the interior, with full-page and double-page photographic layouts that give the book the feel of a hybrid between a literary memoir, photographic biography, and ballet retrospective.

The title page incorporates Plisetskaya’s reproduced handwritten script, while additional pages use expressive sketches and handwritten-style chapter headings.
