Neat Antique Wood Rowing Rudder Painted Cambridge University Sports Trophy For Sale

This exceptional antique rowing rudder is a rare and highly evocative survivor of early 20th-century British collegiate rowing, combining athletic history with ceremonial craftsmanship. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, significant rowing rudders—particularly those associated with Oxford and Cambridge competitions—were often retired and hand-decorated to commemorate important races. These rudders were typically fashioned from hardwood, carefully shaped, finished, and then hand-lettered and gilded with the names of crews, colleges, coaches, and race results, intended for display in boathouses, college halls, and private studies.The painted inscriptions on this example identify it as a Cambridge University Lent Bumps rudder from 1912, one of the university’s most historic rowing events. The Lent Bumps races, held annually on the River Cam, follow a unique “bumping” format in which boats chase one another rather than racing side by side, making each bump or defense of position a celebrated achievement. The rudder references Pembroke College, with additional colleges noted including King’s I (Lady Margaret Boat Club), Clare II, and Magdalene I, along with named crew members, seat positions, and the coach, C. E. S. Bevir.
