The Manitou and Pike's Peak Cog Railway ascends to the 14,115 peak of America's Mountain from the town of Manitou Springs below. Construction was begun in 1889 and the first train reached the summit June 30, 1891. Cog Railways are common in Switzerland, with about 50 known lines throughout the world, but this is one of only three remaining in service in the US. The line runs for 8.9 miles on a standard gauge 4' 8.5" wide track.
