Up for sale is a highly rare, 19th-century American Militia or Staff Officer’s dress accoutrement rig. Heavily inspired by French military patterns of the era, this set dates from the War of 1812 through the American Civil War period. These ornate sets were privately purchased by officers for formal parade and dress uniforms.
This set is incredibly complete, featuring both the shoulder baldric with its cartridge box and the coordinating waist sword belt.
SET INCLUDES & FEATURES:
1. Hardshell Leather Cartridge Box (Giberne): Rigid leather body beautifully framed with its original gilded brass trim. The face of the flap features a prominent, beautifully stamped brass spread-wing American Eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch.
2. Side Suspension Swivels: The original brass pivoting swivels remain intact on both sides of the box, designed to allow the pouch to sit comfortably against the officer's hip.
3. Baldric Strap Ornaments: The black leather shoulder strap features the classic suite of 19th-century officer hardware, including:
- Stamped gilded brass shield with eagle motif.
- Triple-drape brass swag chains.
- Detailed Lion's Head Boss plate.
4. Coordinating Sword Belt: A matching black leather waist belt equipped with its period-correct square brass buckle and brass keeper ring.
CONDITION REPORT:
This set is in original, untouched antique condition. The brass hardware shows a gorgeous, uncleaned aged patina with minor areas of natural verdigris oxidation. The leather displays expected age-related crazing, surface cracking, and finish wear consistent with a 150+ year old artifact. The leather remains stable for display but should be handled with care. (Please review all high-resolution macro photographs carefully to evaluate exact structural conditions.
