Available for purchase is a collectible 18th-century map depicting the Eastern Hemisphere (or \"Old World\"). The map is titled \"Orbis veteribus noti tabula nova\" (New Map of the World Known to the Ancients), originally created in 1714 by Guillaume Delisle(1675–1726). Delisle was a \"scientific\" cartographer whose works transitioned mapmaking from artistic to accurate, empirical data.This map is a republished version from 1742 by Covens & Mortier, a Dutch geographic publishing company based in Amsterdam. The map details Africa to Japan and down to Australia, as originally depicted by Delisle.Japan is joined with a large island labeled \"Terra Incognita\" (Unknown Land) and Australia is shown with an incomplete coastline, consistent with the knowledge of the time.This large map measures approximately 26 3/4\" x 22\". The globe is about 18 3/4\" in diameter and is beautifully hand colored (possibly enhanced later). The map was published on thick paper with a central fold. The reverse side near the top edge has the handwritten notation \"24. Map of the World as Known to the Ancients\". There are also some pencil markings in the lower right corner (easily removed). I purchased thismap at a recent sale that was liquidating the collection of a serious collector. This map is guaranteed to be an original 18th-century map and not a reprint. The hand coloring is bright and very nicely done. There is some chipping along the edges and a small ink stain in the upper right corner of the margin. A lower centerfold tear has been repaired verso with archival tape. Overall, this collectible map looks great and displays well. It would make a fine addition to any collection.
