Pedro Lemos was a Portuguese-born American artist, educator, and printmaker active in California during the early 20th century. He was associated with the Arts and Crafts movement and played a significant role in the development of West Coast printmaking. Lemos served as director of the Stanford University Museum and promoted the woodcut as a primary artistic medium. His works frequently depict California coastal and rural landscapes rendered in simplified decorative forms and flat color harmonies.
“The Cliff Dweller” (1915) presents a gnarled cypress anchored to a rocky coastal outcrop overlooking the sea. The composition emphasizes the twisting trunk and branching structure through strong linear carving and limited tonal variation. Produced in 1915, the print demonstrates Lemos’s early mastery of woodcut technique and his focus on California’s rugged shoreline.
