BABYN YAR. 85th Anniversary of the Tragedy
On September 29, Ukraine honors the memory of the victims of Babyn Yar—one of the largest mass murder sites of World War II.
On September 29–30, 1941, the Nazis shot 33,771 Jews from Kyiv. Men, women, and children perished over the course of two days. However, the executions continued for another two years: Roma, Soviet prisoners of war, Ukrainian underground resistance members, intellectuals, and patients from the Pavlov Psychiatric Hospital were killed near the ravine—on October 13, 1941, over 300 patients were shot. The total number of victims is estimated at between 100,000 and 150,000.
To mark the 85th anniversary of the tragedy, Ukrposhta is releasing a stamp issue featuring works by the Kyiv-born painter, graphic artist, and sculptor Yosyp Vaisblat.
