1935 James J. Braddock "KNOCKOUT" Boxing Board Game - World Heavyweight Champ
Original folding game board made in 1935 by the Braddock-Scarnie Game Corporation, 15 Central Park West, New York, to celebrate James J. Braddock's heavyweight title. On June 13, 1935, Braddock entered the ring as a 10-to-1 underdog and beat Max Baer by 15-round decision, earning the nickname "Cinderella Man." He held the title for two years, until Joe Louis knocked him out in June 1937. That short title reign means few of these boards were made, and fewer still survive in display condition.
The Board
- Large color illustration of Braddock in fighting stance at center, with "JAMES J. BRADDOCK - WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP" and facsimile signature.
- Round trackers numbered 1 through 15 around the portrait, matching a championship-length fight.
- 46 numbered squares for punches and penalties around the outer ring, such as "Terrific Left Hook to Jaw - Gain 6," "Floors Opponent for Count of Nine - Gain 15," "Warned for Not Trying - Loss 2," "Low Punch - Lose Round" and "Knockout Scored."
- Strong, bright blue, yellow and cream colors.
- Red cloth-covered exterior with the original gold-stamped boxing glove "KNOCKOUT" cover design.
- Approx. 19-1/2" x 19-1/2" open.
Condition (please review all photos)
- Board face is clean and bright, with a split along the center fold.
- Cloth spine is worn and partly torn.
- Red exterior has scuffing, staining and some paper loss at one corner of the cover; gold stamping has faded.
- General edge and corner wear consistent with age.
- Board only - no pieces, box or instructions.
Complete sets with pieces, piece box and instructions rarely come up. This board alone is a strong display piece from Braddock's 1935-37 title reign. Framed, it would look great on the wall of a home rec room, man cave or sports bar.
