Vintage handwritten Christmas card from Rosalind Russell (1907–1976) and her husband, producer Frederick “Freddie” Brisson, sent to cinematographer Joseph Walker at Columbia. The small envelope is addressed in the same hand: “Mr Joseph Walker / Columbia Studios / Gower St / Hollywood.”
The card reads: “A Merry Christmas Joe & every good wish for all joy in the New Year. Devotedly Rosalind & Freddie.”
Rosalind Russell (1907–1976) was one of the great comic and dramatic actresses of Hollywood’s golden age. She starred as Hildy Johnson opposite Cary Grant in His Girl Friday (1940), photographed at Columbia by Joseph Walker. She later won a Golden Globe and a Tony for Auntie Mame and received four Academy Award nominations for Best Actress. Other major films include The Women, My Sister Eileen, Picnic, and Gypsy.
Provenance: I acquired this in the 1990s directly from Juanita Walker, wife of legendary Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Joseph (Joe) Walker. Juanita was an avid collector of Hollywood autographs even before marrying Joseph. Joe Walker was Frank Capra’s favorite cameraman and renowned for his ability to make Hollywood’s leading ladies look stunning on screen. Juanita co-authored the book The Light on Her Face about Joe’s illustrious career. This piece comes straight from the Walker family collection.
