Inspired by the Zunow’s distinctive rendering, this lens reinterprets its character for modern photography. At its maximum aperture of f/1.1, it produces a soft glow, atmospheric highlights and shallow depth of field for expressive images. Stop down for a more defined look, and explore how the rendering changes with your subject, lighting and creative intent.

A supplied L39-to-M adapter ring lets you use the lens on Leica M-mount cameras. Remove the ring to use it as an L39 screw-mount lens. From its classic barrel design and engraved details to its pronounced rear-element profile, dedicated lens hood and custom packaging, every detail contributes to the character of TRIBUTE 01.

Inspired by the Zunow 50mm F1.1

The Zunow 50mm F1.1 is a notable lens in the history of Japanese ultra-fast optics. Drawing inspiration from its distinctive rendering, SHOTEN and lens creator DJ Cast Mirror have reinterpreted its character in a modern manual-focus lens.

The f/1.1 maximum aperture creates a shallow depth of field and a soft, atmospheric look wide open. It is well suited to portraits, snapshots and night scenes where you want to shape the image around available light and selective focus.

Classic design with considered details

The lens barrel combines brass and aluminum, with a classic appearance and tactile controls. The aperture ring features click stops. At the rear, the lens incorporates a pronounced profile inspired by the rear element associated with the early Zunow 50mm F1.1, sometimes nicknamed the “Ping Pong Ball.”

The lens and dedicated hood bear the TRIBUTE logo. The supplied accessories and custom red-accented box carry the same design language, making the lens distinctive both in use and as part of a collection.

Adjustable rangefinder coupling

The lens features an adjustment mechanism that lets the user fine-tune its rangefinder coupling. Depending on the camera body and individual tolerances, the focus indicated by the rangefinder may differ slightly from the best focus on the image sensor or film plane. The adjustment ring at the rear of the lens can be used to fine-tune the coupled focus position for your camera and typical shooting distances.

L39 and Leica M compatibility

With the supplied L39-to-M adapter ring attached, the lens is compatible with Leica M mount. Remove the ring to use the lens on L39 screw-mount rangefinder cameras. Compatibility and rangefinder performance may vary by camera body.

SHOTEN TRIBUTE 50mm f/1.1: Optical Characteristics

This lens was designed in tribute to the Zunow 50mm F1.1. It intentionally retains optical characteristics associated with classic lenses, including spherical aberration.

The extremely shallow depth of field at f/1.1, together with the lens’s classic rendering, may cause a slight difference between the rangefinder-indicated focus position and the point of best focus on the imaging plane, depending on shooting distance and conditions.

At distances closer than approximately 1.2 m (3.9 ft), the very shallow depth of field at f/1.1 can make even a small focus discrepancy more visible in the image. The lens’s retained optical characteristics, including spherical aberration, may also make the difference easier to notice.

For practical use, the lens is adjusted to prioritize rangefinder alignment in the medium-distance range. A mechanism is provided for users to make fine adjustments to rangefinder coupling to suit their camera and typical shooting distances.

At f/1.1 and at close distances, depth of field is extremely shallow. For more precise focusing, we recommend using a camera with Live View and tools such as magnified display.

• This is a rangefinder-coupled lens. Due to the lens’s optical characteristics and shooting conditions, the focus indicated by the rangefinder may differ from the point of best focus on the image sensor or film plane. Exact focus agreement is not guaranteed under all conditions.
• The rangefinder is not coupled at distances closer than 0.7m. For shooting between 0.5m and 0.7m, use live view or another focusing aid to confirm focus.
• Damage, failure or other issues resulting from user adjustment of the rangefinder coupling are not covered by the warranty.
