McCOY STADIUM

McCoy Stadium, located in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, was a beloved minor league baseball park that served as the home of the Pawtucket Red Sox (commonly known as the PawSox) from 1970 until the team’s relocation in 2021. Opened in 1942, the stadium was named in honor of Thomas P. McCoy, a former mayor of Pawtucket who played a key role in its construction. McCoy Stadium became a cherished part of Rhode Island’s sports culture, known for its charm, history, and role in developing future MLB stars.

With a seating capacity of over 10,000, McCoy Stadium offered fans an intimate yet professional setting to watch baseball. The park’s most famous moment occurred in 1981 when it hosted the longest game in professional baseball history, a 33-inning marathon between the PawSox and the Rochester Red Wings. This legendary game highlighted the enduring appeal of McCoy Stadium and brought national attention to Pawtucket.

McCoy Stadium was a launching pad for numerous MLB legends during its tenure as a Red Sox affiliate. Carlton Fisk, Fred Lynn, and Jim Rice played there in the 1970s as they developed into stars for Boston. Later generations of players, including Roger Clemens, Nomar Garciaparra, Dustin Pedroia, Mookie Betts, and Xander Bogaerts, also honed their skills at McCoy before achieving major league success. The park was renowned for its fan-friendly environment, where future stars played in close proximity to the crowd.

Although the PawSox relocated to Worcester, Massachusetts, in 2021 and became the Worcester Red Sox, McCoy Stadium remains a fond memory for fans. Its legacy is marked by decades of great baseball, unforgettable moments, and the unique connection it fostered between the community and the game. The stadium stands as a testament to the rich history of minor league baseball in New England.
