America\'s first space station floats above a sea of white clouds, its gold sunshade, cross-shaped solar panels and single big solar wing lit by the sun.
Skylab was America\'s first space station, launched in May 1973 on a Saturn V rocket. It was damaged on the way up, losing one of its big solar wings and part of its heat shield, so the first crew set up a sunshade to keep it cool. This picture was taken in February 1974 as the last crew left after 84 days aboard, a record at the time.
