About This Shirt
Part of the Sun Surf \"National Treasure of Japan\" series, produced in collaboration with the Tokyo National Museum. This edition reproduces a panel from Ito Jakuchu\'s \"Doshoku Sai-e\" (\"Colorful Realm of Living Beings\"), a thirty-scroll masterwork painted between roughly 1757 and 1766 depicting plants and animals in meticulous, jewel-toned detail. This panel, \"Black Rooster and Nandina,\" dates to around 1765 and pairs a game rooster\'s glossy black plumage and vivid red comb with the bright red berries of a nandina shrub in full fruit.
Jakuchu (1716–1800) was the eldest son of a Kyoto greengrocer who abandoned the family trade to devote himself entirely to painting, famously keeping and sketching live roosters at his home for years to master their form. He is now regarded as one of the most original and technically extraordinary painters of the Edo period. Comes complete with original presentation box (excellent condition), original purchase receipt, and print card.
