The Spectator 18th Century Antique Leather Book - Thoresby Hall Earl Manvers Provenance
An original 18th-century leather-bound single volume of The Spectator.
This has verified aristocratic country-house provenance via an included official accompanying letter.
Provenance- an official verification letter from Thoresby Estates Management Limited to say the book originally belonged to Charles Pierrepont, 1st Earl Manvers (1737–1816) and formed part of the foundation collection for the library at Thoresby Park, Nottinghamshire
Antique leather spine with raised bands, gilt-tooling, and a remaining "SPECTATOR" gilt title piece. Shows rubbing, shelf wear, and corner bumping consistent with age.
Boards: Original speckled calf boards with decorative borders. Front cover has partly detached (see pics) the back is stable. Covers show age-related surface wear
The internal pages are in good antique condition overall, remaining highly stable, secure, and clear for a book printed in 1789 The text block shows minimal page discoloration and light foxing on some pages.
The ink is crisp, and the typography remains sharp and fully readable The paper is structurally sound with no major tearing or moisture damage visible on the open sheets, borders are clean and broad, without modern notations or severe corner folding
