VINTAGE NORTHWEST COAST STYLE CARVED & PAINTED CEDAR PADDLE 44\" FORMline ART

Striking vintage hand-carved wooden paddle featuring Northwest Coast formline artwork in red and black.

The paddle is carved from a single piece of cedar and has a sculptural animal or bird-form finial, painted shaft, and a large stylized design across the blade.

The paddle is decorated with traditional Northwest Coast ovoids, U-forms, split U-forms and flowing red-and-black formlines closely associated with the artistic traditions of the Nisga’a, Tsimshian, Haida, Tlingit and Kwakwaka’wakw peoples. The imagery appears to form a continuous supernatural creature with opposing heads and a central humanoid face, possibly representing Sisiyutł, although the specific cultural attribution remains unconfirmed.

I found the paddle in Grayland, WA, which is about 5 miles from the Tokeland reservation.

The reverse is unpainted and bears the signature of the maker.

44 inches long

Approximately 4¾ inches wide at the blade

Condition:

Vintage condition with expected light surface wear, scratches, fading, edge wear, discoloration, and variations in the original painted finish.

No breaks, scratches, cracks, etc
