Original 1940s Red Badger mackinaw/cruiser jacket by Midwest Outerwear Mfg. Co. of Watertown, Wisconsin, built from exceptionally substantial red-and-black buffalo plaid wool and surviving in a remarkably wearable approximately XL size.
This is an unusually distinctive early example, combining a sharp extended point/convertible collar rarely seen on later mackinaws, heavy brass zipper front, large slanted hand pockets, button-adjustable cuffs, substantial period wool construction, and a warm red moleskin-like lining through the body.
The scarce original Red Badger label remains intact and identifies the jacket to Midwest Outerwear Mfg. Co., Watertown, Wisconsin—an especially appealing survivor given how infrequently this maker appears compared with the familiar Woolrich, Filson and hunting-outfitter labels that dominate the surviving mackinaw market.
Good antique/vintage condition with honest wear from roughly eight decades of use, including scattered surface wear, small areas of moth activity and wear to the red interior lining as documented closely in the photos; none of this detracts from the exceptional overall presentation and period character.
No legible size marking remains; measures approximately 25.5” pit-to-pit with detailed shoulder, sleeve and length measurements shown in the photos, making this a particularly compelling piece for collectors of 1930s–50s American outdoor clothing, Great Lakes hunting gear, early workwear, mackinaws and obscure regional manufacturers.
