Vintage Arthur Ray Cole North Carolina art pottery vase, approximately 6” tall, featuring a highly distinctive pair of long applied swirl handles that sweep around the body.
This hand-thrown earthenware vase has a rich mottled green and brown glaze, with variations in the glaze that emphasize the handmade form and throwing lines.
Attribution: This vase closely matches a documented 6-inch Arthur Ray Cole vase dated 1930 in the collection of the Mint Museum. The museum example has the same distinctive body profile and long opposing swirl-handle construction, but is finished in a red glaze. The unusually close match in form, handle placement, proportions and 6” height provides strong evidence for the Arthur Ray Cole attribution.
The underside of this example is unmarked, as shown in the photographs.
