Large and impressive Bamileke-style carved wood helmet mask from the Cameroon Grassfields, featuring an elaborate zoomorphic design with three carved guardian/attendant figures positioned along the back, large expressive eyes outlined in white pigment, exposed carved teeth, prominent ears, and two pairs of dramatic curved tusk-like projections framing the face.
The mask is carved from a substantial piece of wood and is deeply hollowed on the underside.
The interior retains visible hand-carving/tool marks. The dark surface shows extensive age-related wear, rubbing, pigment loss, scratches, and areas of exposed wood that give the piece a striking aged appearance.
An older handwritten collection/dealer tag remains with the mask and reads approximately “Champa Mask L055 / From: Nigeria / $1,200.00.” The tag represents an earlier attribution and pricing and is included with the piece. Based on stylistic comparison, the mask appears more consistent with the Bamileke/Cameroon Grassfields tradition, particularly elaborate masks incorporating guardian figures and zoomorphic elements. The historical tag\'s attribution has not been independently verified.
