Vintage Birks Rideau Plate 4pc Canadian Silverplate Tea Coffee Set Hand Chased For Sale

Four-piece vintage Rideau Plate tea and coffee service made for Henry Birks & Sons of Montreal, Canada, likely 1930s. The matching service includes coffee pot, teapot, open sugar bowl, and cream or milk pitcher. Silver plate over copper with a lobed body, raised floral panels, cast foliate feet, molded borders. Hand chased detail work. The pot handles appear to be Phenolic, something akin to bakelite and heat resistant.

This set genuinely presents well. It shows some age, but doesn\'t warrant apologies for historical improper polish like so much plate. There is warm copper showing through the silver along high points but silver over copper just seems to age better than other substrates and it feels as much like character as it does wear.

• Light hand polish, no machine work or heavy detail performed. Some oxidization remains in tight corners and heavier locations. A bit of old compound remains in some very tight spots.
• Broad exterior surfaces still have strong reflection, light surface wear under scrutiny, no pronounced hatch marks, burns, dulling from over-polish.
• Silver loss along many raised edges and decorative details exposes the warm copper substrate.
• Interiors retain oxidation, discoloration, and use wear and have not been fully detailed. Thorough interior cleaning is recommended before beverage service.
• Teapot hinge has separated. Its lid still seats properly, but it is no longer fully hinged and should be supported or handled separately when opened. The teapot remains functional and does not leak.
• The coffee-pot hinge is fully sound. Both pots sit flat and do not leak.
• No dents, body distortion, repairs, unstable feet, or other looseness observed.
• All pieces received a final fingerprint-free wipe. A very light application of Renaissance Wax was made to selected exterior high points to help mitigate oxidation and protect the freshly polished surfaces during handling.
