HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Launched on 9 April 1921, RMS Laconia entered Cunard passenger service in May 1922. She operated as a passenger liner until her wartime requisition in September 1939.
On 21 November 1922, she departed New York on the first continuous world cruise by a passenger liner. Chartered by American Express, she returned on 30 March 1923 after a pioneering 130-day voyage.
Requisitioned as an armed merchant cruiser in 1939, she became a troopship in 1941. On 12 September 1942, she was torpedoed and sunk in the South Atlantic by German U-boat U-156. Approximately 1,650 lives were lost, exceeding the death toll of the Titanic disaster.
