About Menko: Menko (メンコ) is a traditional Japanese children\'s card game with roots going back to the Edo period. Thick illustrated cardboard cards were thrown or slapped down to try to flip over an opponent\'s card and win it — a bit like Western trading-card flipping games, but a distinctly Japanese pastime. From the 1960s through the 1980s, menko were mass produced featuring the most popular anime, tokusatsu (live-action superhero), and pop-culture characters of the day, and were sold cheaply at candy shops and street stalls across Japan. They were meant to be played with, so most surviving examples show honest wear from being handled, stacked, and slapped down by kids decades ago. Today these cards are collected as nostalgic snapshots of Japanese childhood and anime/tokusatsu history.
