VINTAGE JAPANESE BANTAI SHIKKI WOVEN BAMBOO URUSHI LACQUER OSHIBORI TOWEL TRAYS (SET OF 5 WITH ORIGINAL BOX) - SHOWA ERA TRADITIONAL JAPANESE CRAFT（＃1986）
An authentic set of 5 vintage Japanese traditional lacquerware serving trays known as "Bantai Shikki Oshibori-Uke" (籃胎漆器 おしぼり受け), complete with their original paper presentation box from the mid-20th century Showa era. Crafted by weaving thin strips of natural bamboo into an intricate geometric pattern and coating the body with multiple coats of natural Urushi lacquer, these oval trays combine artisanal beauty with practical daily utility.
[THE CULTURAL HERITAGE & CRAFTSMANSHIP OF BANTAI SHIKKI]- Master Bamboo Weaving (籃胎漆器): Bantai lacquerware is a celebrated traditional craft from Kyushu, Japan (famous in Kurume, Fukuoka). Skilled artisans weave fine bamboo splints into delicate patterns—such as the Asanoha (hemp leaf) star design seen here—before applying layers of protective, lustrous Urushi lacquer.- Rich Two-Tone Urushi Finish: The sleek black lacquer surface subtly reveals glowing crimson undertones beneath the raised woven nodes, creating a sophisticated patina that deepens with age.- Hospitality Culture (Omotenashi): "Oshibori" are warm or cold wet hand towels offered to guests before meals in Japanese hospitality culture. These traditional trays serve as elegant holders for towel presentation.
[VERSATILE USES FOR MODERN HOMES]- Guest Hospitality: Elegant serving trays for wet towels (Oshibori) during dinner parties or tea gatherings.- Tea & Dining Accent: Perfect as small dish/coaster trays for Japanese sweets (Wagashi), tea bags, wrapped candies, or appetizers.- Desktop & Vanity Organizer: Stylish catch-all tray for fountain pens, jewelry, keys, incense sticks, or desk accessories.
