Vintage Japanese Dento Kokeshi Dolls - Curated Trio - Tsuchiyu & Nanbu

A beautifully curated trio of traditional Japanese Dento Kokeshi dolls, representing distinct regional traditions of Japanese woodturning and hand-painted folk art from the Showa period.

This charming collection features one impressive 15-inch centerpiece accompanied by two 7-inch dolls, creating a harmonious display with an approximate 2:1 height ratio.

Each doll has its own distinctive personality, artistic details, and traditional construction.

1. Large Centerpiece - 15” H x 2.5\" base diameter

Attributed to Jinnohara Kazunori (陳野原和紀, 1929–1998)

Tsuchiyu School - Kumematsu-gata Style

An impressive large-format traditional kokeshi featuring expressive double-lined eyes, a gentle smile, and a beautifully restrained striped body design (shima-monyo).

The head rotates firmly and produces the distinctive wooden creaking sound associated with traditional Tsuchiyu kokeshi (kubi-mawashi).

2. The Girl - 7 3/8” H x 1 5/8\" base diameter

Attributed to Sakuma Asako (佐久間アサ子, 1920–2009)

Tsuchiyu School

A charming traditional kokeshi associated with the Sakuma family of Tsuchiyu artisans.

Historical Japanese references document that Asako participated in kokeshi production for a brief period around 1960, painting facial features on dolls whose wooden bodies and lathe-applied decoration were produced by her husband, Yoshio Sakuma.

This example features beautifully arched eyebrows, delicately rendered eyes, an expressive brush-painted nose, and softly faded red decorative painting along the body.

3. The Boy - 7 1/4” H x 1.6\" base diameter

Attributed to Kin Gozo (金五三, born 1928)

Nanbu / Hanamaki Tradition - Kina-kina Style

A delightful traditional Kina-kina kokeshi featuring a charming, expressive face and a beautifully simple natural wood body.

Traditional Nodding Head: The boy’s head moves freely and gently nods or tilts, a characteristic feature of traditional Nanbu Kina-kina kokeshi. This movement is intentional and part of the doll’s original construction, not a defect.

The simplicity of the turned wooden form beautifully highlights the natural grain and craftsmanship.

Condition:All three dolls are in very good vintage condition, displaying attractive natural patina and age-appropriate wear.

Large Kokeshi: Beautifully preserved facial painting with noticeable age-related wear and areas of pigment loss in the black-painted hair and concentric crown decoration. The wooden body retains its warm natural tone and subtle red striping.

Girl: Beautifully preserved facial features with crisp black brushwork. The original red decorative painting on the body has softened and faded over time. Minor surface wear and natural age-related patina are present.

Boy: Well-preserved facial painting and black crown decoration. The natural wood body shows light surface scuffs, minor scratches, and variations in tone. Faded red decorative brushwork remains visible on the side of the head. The traditional nodding-head mechanism functions as intended.

No obvious structural cracks, significant chips, or repairs were observed during visual inspection.
