Vintage Japanese Toyama Medicine Wooden Box Set – Set of 2
A fascinating set of two vintage wooden medicine boxes associated with the traditional Toyama medicine distribution culture (Toyama no Kusuri) of Japan.
Toyama became famous throughout Japan for its unique home medicine distribution system known as “Senyo Kori” (先用後利). Medicines were left with households in advance, and traveling medicine sellers periodically returned to collect payment only for the medicines that had actually been used and to replenish the supply.
This traditional system has a history stretching back hundreds of years and became an important part of Japanese pharmaceutical and commercial culture.
The boxes retain attractive period Japanese labels, markings and advertising graphics, including references associated with Toyama, Koukandou (廣貫堂), Fukura/Sparrow trademark, and Rokushin Gan (六神丸).

The original labels and markings show age-related deterioration.
