Likely created in central Europe—possibly France, Spain, or Italy—during the 15th or early 16th century, the Voynich Manuscript has a rich provenance. It was once owned by Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II (1576–1612), who commissioned his court pharmacist, Jacobus Horcicky de Tepenecz, to study it. English astrologer John Dee (1527–1608) is also linked to its history. The manuscript later found its way into the collections of Johannes Marcus Marci von Landskron (1595–1667) and Georg Baresch, who sought the expertise of Renaissance scholar Athanasius Kircher (1601–1680) for its decryption. Over the following centuries, the manuscript circulated through various Italian and Roman libraries until it was rediscovered by Wilfrid M. Voynich (1865–1930) in 1912 at Villa Mondragone in Frascati. Voynich donated the manuscript to Yale University in 1969, where it remains today.
