The historic car ferry City of Tacoma was built in 1921 in Gig Harbor, Washington, by the Skansie Brothers and served the South Puget Sound auto route before sinking in 1969.
History and Operations
Launch & Route: Completed in December 1921, the City of Tacoma started early auto ferry service on the Narrows route between Tacoma and Gig Harbor.
Design & Specs: It measured 150 feet long by 44 feet wide, holding roughly 300 passengers and 50 cars. It originally featured an open car deck, though early steam-powered versions required roofs or protections because wood-fueled smokestacks emitted sparks that burned holes in early canvas car tops.
Conversions: The vessel was re-engined with a diesel motor in 1927.
Retirement and Final Disposition
Retirement: The ferry was retired and sold in 1951, later serving as a floating breakwater and storage barge at the Lake Washington Marina.
Wreck Site: The historic hull sank at Yarrow Bay in July 1969 and now rests as a popular underwater scuba diving site in Lake Washington near Houghton.
