The Marine enlisted collar disk, 1918–1920, is a direct result of Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin D. Roosevelt’s intervention. While inspecting the 4th Marine Brigade in 1918, he authorized the wearing of a “Marine Corps device on the collar points of his (their) shirt.” The Army Paymaster (some sources suggest it was the Marine Paymaster in Paris) procured collar disks similar to the Army’s unit disks for the Marines. The only difference was the stamped Eagle, Globe, and Anchor. Enlisted collar EGA emblems similar to Marine officers’ EGAs were not authorized until 1920.
