Across The Top Is The Inscription: "COLUMBIA GIVES TO HER SON THE ACCOLADE OF THE NEW CHIVALRY OF HUMANITY"--The Certificate Is Individually Inscribed In Ink To: Lewis J. Brooks, Pvt, Co.(?), 103rd Infantry--Below His Name Is The Printed Statement: "SERVED WITH HONOR IN THE WORLD WAR AND WOUNDED IN ACTION".
The Artwork Was Designed By Noted American Artist And Muralist Edwin Howland Blashfield (1848-1936) With His Printed Design Credit Visible At The Lower Right Of The Illustration--A Printed/Facsimile Signature Of President Woodrow Wilson Appears At Lower Right.
The 103rd Infantry Regiment Was Formed Around The 2nd Maine Infantry During World War I And Was Assigned To The 26Th “Yankee” Division.--The Regiment Served Overseas In France And Participated In Major Combat Operations During 1918--Although I Saw Many Items Relating To Maine At The Estate Sale Where I Purchased This Item, The Connection Of This Particular Soldier, Lewis J. Brooks, To The Former 2nd Maine Infantry Has Not Been Independently Confirmed, So No Specific Hometown, Company Or Battle Is Being Attributed To Him.
Measures Approximately 20 Inches X 16 1/4 Inches Overall, Including Frame--Antique WWI Certificate Remains Framed And Has Not Been Removed Due To The Fragile Condition Of The Paper--Certificate Shows Substantial Age Toning, Discoloration, Foxing/Staining, Wrinkles/Creases And Other Age-Related Wear--Wood Frame Has Scratches, Chips, Finish Loss And General Wear--Old Backing And Hanging Wire Remain In Place.
