FREE SHIPPING This is an Arts and Crafts example of Wileman's Spano-Lustra glaze, created c. 1896. There is considerable hand decoration of a fruit-bearing tree. I don't know whether the initial hand-painted on the bottom would refer to the decorator, but the designer was Frederick Alfred Rhead (1856-1933).
The techniques involved appear to be the same as those his son Frederick Hurten Rhead would employ to create Roseville Pottery'sacclaimedDella Robbia line a few years later. This involved casting the shape in two contrasting shades, and while leather hard and before glazing and glaze firing, the decorator would carve through the outer layer (golden brown in this case), to reveal the under- and interior layer (dark brown in this case).
Measures 5.25" t. x 7.75" diameter. No damage or restoration.
Note that there is a very small spot on the edge of the foot where the decorator's knife slipped, carving away a small bit of the golden yellow, revealing the dark brown. Can sell for $595 postpaid.
