Sir William Orpen (1878–1931) was an Irish-born portraitist and painter who studied at Dublin's Metropolitan School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Recognized for his portrait work and influence from Édouard Manet, Orpen gained prominence through the New English Art Club. During World War I, he served as Britain's most prolific official war artist, appointed in 1917 and documenting the Western Front's brutal realities through paintings such as A Grave in a Trench, Blown Up Mad, and Dead Germans in a Trench. Following the armistice, he was commissioned to paint the Paris Peace Conference, creating The Signing of Peace in the Hall of Mirrors Versailles in 1919, a pivotal record of post-war diplomacy. Knighted in 1918 and elected Royal Academician in 1919, Orpen produced 138 works for the Imperial War Museum, establishing himself as a major artistic witness to the First World War's devastation and legacy.
