Offered here is an exceptional Cold War diplomatic presentation copy, inscribed in 1985 by Dr. Lucijan Dedijer, Ambassador of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, to John Davis Lodge, United States Ambassador to Switzerland and former Governor of Connecticut. This is a genuine piece of late–Cold War diplomatic history, preserved with its original ephemera.
The volume contains a handwritten dedication from Ambassador Dedijer to Ambassador Lodge, dated 16 April 1985, Bern, expressing compliments and friendship. Included with the book is the ambassador’s official business card, further confirming its diplomatic provenance. Items of this nature were produced in extremely limited quantities and presented only to high‑ranking officials as part of formal cultural‑exchange protocol.
This example represents a rare surviving artifact of Yugoslav–U.S. diplomatic relations during a pivotal period shortly before the dissolution of Yugoslavia. Books inscribed ambassador‑to‑ambassador almost never reach the public market, as most remain in government archives or private estates. The combination of inscription, date, location, and recipient makes this a one‑of‑one historical piece.
Presented by Dr. Lucijan Dedijer, Ambassador of the SFR Yugoslavia, to Ambassador John Davis Lodge, U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland, on 16 April 1985 in Bern. Includes the ambassador’s original business card. A rare diplomatic gift from a significant Cold War figure to a prominent American statesman.
This book shows normal age‑related wear, including possible shelf rubbing, tanning, foxing, dinged corners, discoloration, light soiling or toning.
